The amount of mobile data traffic varies during a day, and unpredictable events cause additional temporary load surges to the network cells. However, the traditional approach to scale up network capacity by deploying additional dedicated hardware to the network provides insufficient exibility. A future approach to avoid investments to expensive, dedicated networking devices and increase exibility is to virtualize their functions to software and provide them using a cloud platform on top of generic hardware. Virtualization decouples functionality from the hardware that provides it and cloud platforms automate virtualization management.
