The aim of this thesis was to get a clear understanding of the base paper strength, its development and factors affecting it, on a MWC paper machine line. Another aim was to find out the optimum refining level of reinforcement pulp. The purpose of reinforcement pulp refining is to effect the internal and external fibrillation of fibers so that they will form a strong fiber network and to maximize runnability related strength properties of the base paper. It was found out that the refining of reinforcement pulp has a major effect on the bonding of fibers and on the strength of the fiber network. It was also found out that to maximize the tensile strength of the fiber network refining should happen at a level of 230 kWh/t and in one ste...
