A combinatory method for the in-line analysis of effective alkalinity and dry content of weak black liquor was developed. Refractometry and conductometry were successfully combined in a prototype version of the method. The prototype was tested in proper factory conditions at Stora Enso Group’s paper mill located in Veitsiluoto and the results were verified against laboratory assays performed onsite. Refractometry and conductometry were shown to behave in a purely additive way within the concentration range used in this work after a simple variable substitution is performed on the refractive index.
