Determination of effective alkali and lignin content in black liquors

A combinatory method for the in-line analysis of effective alkalinity and dry content of weak black liquor was developed. Refractometry and conductometry were successfully combined in a prototype version of the method. The prototype was tested in proper factory conditions at Stora Enso Group’s paper mill located in Veitsiluoto and the results were verified against laboratory assays performed onsite. Refractometry and conductometry were shown to behave in a purely additive way within the concentration range used in this work after a simple variable substitution is performed on the refractive index. During the laboratory experiments, coefficients for concentrations and temperature correlations were found for the sensors used in this work for the artificial black liquor base used. For the concentrations, coefficients were found for effective alkalinity, lignin content, sulfidity, and other alkali compounds, which were represented by sodium carbonate. Temperature correlation was found for effective alkalinity and lignin content. The equipment was put together from common, easily available components, using for example a Raspberry Pi computer for the calculations required by the method. The software used in the calculations was mostly programmed from scratch with the exception of some communication libraries used. For protection from the factory conditions the equipment was constructed in a protective enclosure. In the factory experiments a new set of coefficients were calculated, as the coefficients gained from the previous laboratory experiments gave impossible results. The new coefficients gave good results when the raw material used in the process was birch chips. Irregularities during the time softwood chips were used cause the coefficients for softwood to be less precise. The results are still usable, but the accuracy of the measurement is worse than for birch. The method developed has been shown to be applicable for the particular use investigated. There are still ways to improve its performance in precision and temperature correction, but theoretical applicability for the process is shown. The method is able to give relatively accurate concentrations for the compounds required much faster than previous titrimetric methods.Työssä kehitettiin yhdistelmämittaus tehollisen alkaliteetin ja kuiva-ainepitoisuuden jatkuvaan määrittämiseen laihasta mustalipeästä. Mittausmenetelminä käytettiin taitekerroin- ja johtokykymittauksia. Laitteisto kehitettiin prototyyppiasteelle ja lopulliset mittaukset suoritettiin todellisissa olosuhteissa Stora Enso Oyj:n tehtaalla Veitsiluodossa. Laitteiston toiminta tarkistettiin laboratoriomääritysten avulla. Kirjallisuuden perusteella todettiin sekä taitekertoimen, että johtokyvyn käyttäytyvän tutkitulla pitoisuusalueella summaavina suureina, kunhan taitekertoimelle suoritettiin ennen summausta yksinkertainen muuttujanvaihto. Laboratoriokokeissa määritettiin pitoisuus- ja lämpötilakorrelaatiot käytetyillä antureilla keinotekoisessa mustalipeäliuoksessa. Pitoisuuskertoimet määritettiin teholliselle alkaliteetille, ligniinille, sulfiditeetille sekä muille alkaliyhdisteille, joita edustamaan käytettiin natriumkarbonaattia. Lämpötilakertoimien alustavat arvot määritettiin teholliselle alkaliteetille ja ligniinille. Laitteisto koottiin helposti saatavilla olevista osista, käyttäen muun muassa laskentaan Raspberry Pi -pientietokonetta. Laskentaan käytetty ohjelmisto kehitettiin suurimmaksi osaksi itse tätä työtä varten. Tehdasoloja varten laitteisto sijoitettiin suojakuoren sisään lopullista asennusta varten. Tehdaskokeissa määritettiin laitteistolle uudet laskentavakiot aiempien laboratoriokokeiden pohjalta määritettyjen parametrien antaessa mahdottomia tuloksia. Uusien laskentavakioiden todettiin antavan pitoisuuksille hyviä tuloksia, kun prosessin raaka-aineena käytettiin koivuhaketta. Havuhakkeen ajossa esiintyneiden poikkeamien takia sille saadut laskentavakiot eivät antaneet yhtä hyviä tuloksia pitoisuuksille, joten lisätyö on tarpeellista. Tässä työssä kehitetty menetelmä on osoitettu käyttökohteeseensa soveltuvaksi. Menetelmän tarkkuudessa ja varsinkin lämpötilakompensaation oikeellisuudessa on vielä parannettavaa, mutta sen periaatteellinen toimivuus on osoitettu.
