Sähkönsiirtojärjestelmän vikojen havaitseminen tapahtuu releillä, jotka tarkkailevat verkosta mitattavia tietoja, esimerkiksi suojattavan johdon impedanssia. Mikäli releen mittaama arvo alittaa tai ylittää (reletyypistä riippuen) sille asetellun toiminta-arvon, rele antaa laukaisukäskyn katkaisijalle, joka irrottaa vioittuneen osan verkosta. Työn tavoitteena oli kehittää verkon muutostilojen laskennassa käytettävään PSS/E -ohjelmistoon toiminnallisuus, jonka avulla voidaan dynamiikkasimuloinnein tarkastella verkossa olevien releiden toimintaa vikojen jälkeisten tehoheilahtelujen aikana.
