Evaluating the Need for Power Swing Blocking in Distance Relays with Dynamic Simulations

Sähkönsiirtojärjestelmän vikojen havaitseminen tapahtuu releillä, jotka tarkkailevat verkosta mitattavia tietoja, esimerkiksi suojattavan johdon impedanssia. Mikäli releen mittaama arvo alittaa tai ylittää (reletyypistä riippuen) sille asetellun toiminta-arvon, rele antaa laukaisukäskyn katkaisijalle, joka irrottaa vioittuneen osan verkosta. Työn tavoitteena oli kehittää verkon muutostilojen laskennassa käytettävään PSS/E -ohjelmistoon toiminnallisuus, jonka avulla voidaan dynamiikkasimuloinnein tarkastella verkossa olevien releiden toimintaa vikojen jälkeisten tehoheilahtelujen aikana. Toiminnallisuutta testataan työn lopuksi ja saatuja tuloksia on tarkoitus hyödyntää releasettelujen määrittämisessä ja arvioitaessa onko distanssireleisiin aseteltavissa olevien heilahtelusalpojen käyttäminen tarpeellista, jotta releiden virhetoiminnot tehoheilahtelujen aikana voidaan sulkea pois. Distanssirele voi nimittäin tulkita suuren tehoheilahtelun viaksi ja aiheuttaa näin virheellisen laukaisun. Heilahtelusalpa on toiminto, joka erottaa heilahtelutilanteen viasta ja estää releen virheellisen toiminnan tehoheilahtelujen aikana. Tavoitteen saavuttamiseksi kehitettiin reletyökalu, jonka avulla pystytään tutkimaan releiden toimintaa simulaation aikana. Työkalun toteutuksessa käytettiin apuna ohjelman tarjoamia relemalleja, jotka kuvaavat reaalimaailman releitä. Tärkeä osa toteutusta oli erilaisten apuohjelmien kehittäminen. Reletyökalua testattiin simuloimalla erilaisia tilanteita pohjoismaisessa siirtoverkossa tavoitteena hankkia tietoa releiden mittaamista impedansseista sekä mahdollisista reletoiminnoista. Testauksen perusteella voidaan sanoa, että reletyökalun toteutus onnistui ja työkalu toimi kuten oli tarkoitus. Simulointien perusteella voidaan todeta, että distanssireleiden virhetoiminnot eivät ole todennäköisiä tilanteissa, joissa stabiiliusehdot sekä siirtokapasiteettien asettamat rajoitukset täyttyvät. Näin ollen distanssireleen heilahtelusalpaa ei yleensä tarvita, mutta joillakin johdoilla sitä on kuitenkin perusteltua käyttää.Faults in power systems are detected by using relays which observe data, e.g. the impedance of the protected line, metered from the grid. If the metered value exceeds or goes under its reference value, the relay sends a trip signal to the switching device that disconnects the faulty component from the grid. The purpose of this thesis was to develop a method which can be used to observe relay events during power oscillations caused by faults. The method should operate in conjunction with the power system simulation software PSS/E and this is tested at the end of the work. The results are used to study whether it is necessary to use power swing blocking in distance relays to exclude the possibility of erroneous relay events. False tripping can occur because a distance relay might interpret large power oscillations as a fault and thereby trip an intact line. Power swing blocking is a function that separates power swinging from fault events and prevents relays from tripping because of power oscillations. A relay tool that can be used to monitor relay events during dynamic simulations was developed. Relay models from the dynamic library of the software were used to represent real-world relays. The planning and execution of special-purpose macros played an important role in the tool's implementation. Finally, the relay tool was tested by performing simulations with the Nordic grid model. The main target was to study the impedances metered by the relays and to examine if any relay events occurred. Based on the testing, the implementation of the relay tool was successful and the tool worked as it was meant to. According to the simulations, it can be stated that erroneous trippings of distance relays are not probable in power flow cases in which the terms of stability and transfer capacity are fulfilled. Hence, it is not necessary to use power swing blocking in distance relays on most of the transmission lines. However, it is justified to use it in some specific cases
