This chapter reviews the archaeological evidence for the development of the Salford bank of the River Irwell during the 18th and 19th centuries in Greater Manchester, UK. The focus is on what recent developer-funded excavations can reveal about the development and scale of Salford Quay, established in 1755 by the Salford Quay Company, and the Oldfield Road terminus of the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal, establish in 1795. It looks at the roles of river reclamation and private wharves in the industrial development of the city
