As other contributions to this book show, there has been a paradigm shift from research on children to research with children. The focus of this chapter, however, is on what appears to be the growing potential for a further shift to research by children. To use an ambiguous category just for a moment, there has been a real growth in research led by ‘children and young people’, as an area of activity and as a field of academic interest, in this century.
