This paper presents a methodology to model the geomechanical parameters of heterogeneous rock masses based on geostatistical simulation. The methodology is then applied to the numerical analysis of a rock mass mechanical behaviour due to the excavation of a tunnel with the explicit representation of geomechanical heterogeneities. Geostatistics is a probabilistic method that allows the simulation of one, or more, regionalised variables, taking into account their spatial correlation. Hence, the proposed methodology intends to map, simultaneously, the uncertainty associated with the geomechanical parameters quantification, their spatial variability and the heterogeneities existing in the rock masses at different spatial scales.
