Muscle regeneration involves functional interactions between different types of mononuclear cells including myogenic progenitors (MPs) and macrophages. Following injury, damaged muscles are invaded by immune cells and MPs fuse to generate new myofibres. Transient fibrotic and adipocyte deposits are observed in regenerating muscles, which however persist in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and during aging. We demonstrated that fibro-adipogenic progenitors (FAPs) expressing the PDGFRα surface marker would contribute to the development of non-myogenic deposits in healthy muscles.
