En torno a la faldriquera: vestidos, cortes y recortes en Rinconete y Cortadillo

International audienceTo human beings, clothes suggest or even impose onto others an identity, and even more strikingly a social one. This identity may easily be altered: any one can put on a garment, take it off, dye it, sew it or unstitch it, etc. In Cervantes’s works, clothes become a significant instrument of transformation or recreation of reality. In Rinconete y Cortadillo, the pieces of garments mentioned share one significant characteristic: they are all threadbare, unstitched, torn or shabby-looking. This can be accounted for by the fact that those wearing them are outcasts, whether willingly or not. The whole world in which they live, and not just their clothes, comes unstitched, with everything looking worn, as is tellingly exemplified by the language used. In such world, Rincón and Cortado cut, destroy, tear asunder or plunder clothes, i.e. the material of everyone’s appearance, their social cover, the identity they suggest to others. This way, they try and reach under clothes/appearances, looking for gussets hidden under, the most intimate part of one’s identity. In this regard, Rincón and Cortado operate much in the same way as Cervantes with words, looking for what is concealed under appearances, probing under reality’s superficial scope. They live in a threadbare and broken world, whose conventions they have made theirs, and which they endeavour to unstitch even further. But as the text says, they end up leaving this very world, after just few months, thus leading one to the conclusion that men may have an impact on the world in which they live by adopting its conventions or refusing to do so, or they may leave it, showing that other paths exist, rather than changing sides…and clothes.El ser humano, al vestirse, sugiere o más bien impone a los demás una identidad, y en particular una identidad social. Esa identidad se puede fácilmente manipular: cada cual puede ponerse un vestido, quitarlo, teñirlo, coserlo, descoserlo, etc… Bajo la pluma de Cervantes, en particular, el vestido viene así a ser un instrumento significativo de transformación o recreación de la realidad.En Rinconete y Cortadillo, el conjunto de las prendas que aparecen tienen una característica significativa: son prendas maltratadas, descosidas, rotas o de mal aspecto. Y eso porque los que las llevan son seres marginados, sea de modo voluntario o no. Y lo descosido no se limita a la ropa: todo el universo en el que se mueven los personajes parece haber sido también deteriorado, como lo revela significativamente del idioma ahí empleado.En ese universo, Rincón y Cortado cortan, rompen, despedazan o saquean los vestidos, o sea lo que constituye la apariencia de cada cual, su armadura social, la identidad que propone a los demás. Saquean los trajes para ir a buscar las faldriqueras que se esconden bajo los vestidos/apariencias, parte más íntima de esa identidadTal vez hagan ellos lo que Cervantes hace con su pluma: ir a buscar lo que se esconde bajo las apariencias, escarbar bajo la superficie que nos ofrece la realidad. Ellos evolucionan en un universo descosido, roto, del cual han adoptado los códigos y que se afanan en romper más aun. Pero ese mismo universo, al final, al cabo de algunos meses, según dice el texto, lo abandonan. De lo cual se puede inferir que el hombre puede influir en el mundo en el que vive, adoptando sus códigos o no, y puede abandonarlo: otros caminos existen, basta con cambiar de camisa
