International audienceIn the course of the Nine Years War (1688-1697) Louis XIV found himself confronted by a vast coalition. Only the Ottoman Empire had naturally allied itself to France to defeat their common enemy: the (Holy Roman) Emperor. Despite the absence of joint military operations, the allies were obliged to coordinate their war efforts. It was the French ambassador at the Sublime Porte who served as intermediary between the two governments. With time the correspondence between Versailles and Constantinople became a strategic issue. To ensure prompt and safe delivery of dispatches, France set up a transport route using a system of express boats.
