L'ESTHETIQUE DE BECKETT

International audienceIf Freud first emphasized the uncanny in art, this “tale of ghosts”, Beckett puts the uncanny on stage. His fascination with death and the decomposition of bodies ally him with the great explorers of evil and horror, like Bataille, Céline or Artaud. As with those authors, Beckett’s texts are the expression of both a collective and intimate disaster – that of the 20th century. From the sly wit of his first works, to the musical, formal beauty of his last works, Beckett invents a writing for his psychic survival. Far from the nihilism we wrongly attribute to him, the work of Beckett transfigures the melancholic fascination with nothingness into a work of art where a living death triumphs. From the first book-vessels to hold the ruins of cultures and languages according to the Joycean model (Murphy, Watt), to the book as a process of decomposition, that converts ghastly waste into a burst of laughter or a relic invested with a sacred aura (the Trilogy, and the first plays), the works of the late Beckett explore the infinite vitality of letter-particles: minute suspended matter held at the edge of nothingness.
