Les ambiguïtés du patrimoine nomade des Kazakhs

Nonetheless, for all that they reclaim this heritage, they remain influenced by negative representations of nomads, and, having difficulty in combining pastoralism and modernity, they proclaim themselves at the same time founders of cities, inventors of writing and creators of state, in a construction of primordialism and a quest for ancestral grounding which they share with other Central Asian republics. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, debates upon sedentarisation showed all the ambivalence of the Russian and Kazakh positions on the topic. Following independence, the ‘patrimonialisation’ of nomadism focused upon some ancillary emblems, such as the yurt or the horse, neglecting the essential feature, residential mobility, and, in ignoring actual nomadic practices, it definitively relegated nomadism to the past. Ethnography, conceived as a historical discipline consistently built on an evolutionist paradigm, described Kazakh pastoralism as relevant to a temporal elsewhere (before the 1917 revolution) or a geographical one (beyond the borders of Kazakhstan), and it showed little interest in the actual realities of mobile pastoralism, despite it being practiced by a small part of the population.Se présentant comme les héritiers des nomades des steppes, les Kazakhs ont, depuis l’indépendance du Kazakhstan en 1991, mis en avant leur patrimoine nomade comme fondement de leur identité. Néanmoins tout en revendiquant ce legs, ils restent influencés par des représentations négatives des nomades et, parvenant mal à associer le pastoralisme à la modernité, ils se proclament en même temps fondateurs de cités, inventeurs de l’écriture et créateurs d’État, dans un primordialisme et une quête d’ancestralité qu’ils partagent avec d’autres Républiques centrasiatiques. Aux XIXe et XXe siècles, les débats sur la sédentarisation montraient toute l’ambivalence des positions russes et kazakhes sur le sujet. Après l’indépendance, la patrimonialisation du nomadisme se focalise sur quelques emblèmes accessoires, comme la iourte ou le cheval, en négligeant l’essentiel, la mobilité de l’habitat, et rejette définitivement le nomadisme dans le passé en ignorant les pratiques nomades actuelles. L’ethnographie, conçue comme une discipline historique toujours marquée par un paradigme évolutionniste, décrit le pastoralisme kazakh comme relevant d’un ailleurs temporel (antérieur à la révolution de 1917) ou spatial (hors des frontières du Kazakhstan) et ne s’intéresse guère aux réalités actuelles du pastoralisme mobile, pourtant pratiqué par une petite partie de la population
