International audienceaccording to the letter of European Union (EU) law, all the languages of Member States enjoy equality. In practice, however, the situation is different. Europan institutions have devised their own working regime: the European Parliament sticks to multilingualism, whereas the Court of Justice of the European Union works in French. The mainstream situation is an overwhelming hegemony of English: "tout-à-l'anglais" as the French expression has it. Moreover English works as a lingua franca only in dreams: on average, only 38% of EU citizens declare in survey that they are able to cope with interacting in English with one of their fellow citizen.
