In an elementary fashion, the point of this article is to relate the historical production of Newton's first law, later named the "principle of inertia". A detailed analysis of the works of Galileo, Descartes and their successors is decisive for doing so. Less elementarily, we show that any study into the discovery of a principle such as inertia is subordinate to a prejudicial methodological question: "which criteria allow us to declare that it is indeed the same principle that is found in two texts?"
