Since the development of high-speed electronics, digital signal processing has become essential to optical transmission systems. In particular, equalization now allows compensating signal distortions resulting from the propagation in the fiber. In this thesis, we focus on another type of signal processing: the coding techniques. We present three new ideas in order to improve systems performance by reducing either the bit-error rate or the receiver complexity. Forward-error correction has been used for many years in optical transmission systems in order to guarantee very low bit-error rates. With the increase of transmission bit rates, more powerful codes are expected such as low-density parity check (LDPC) codes. We study this new family of...
