The common dentex, Dentex dentex (Linnaeus, 1758), is an iconic marine coastal bony fish in the Mediterranean Sea. The common dentex, due to its large size, flesh quality, and high commercial value, is targeted by both artisanal and recreational fishing, especially in Corsica. As a top predator, it is a potential indicator species for the structure and functioning of the coastal ecosystems on which it depends. D. dentex is classified by the IUCN as «Vulnerable».
