Ensuring the safety of life at sea by assessing the ship ability not to be vulnerable to capsize in rough seas is the major motivation of this PhD. The course stability of the ship in following waves, the surging, the surf-riding and the broaching-to phenomena were studied using a system based model coupled with an experimental model.The numerical part of this model uses the instantaneous immersed surface capture that takes into account the non-linearities of the wave profile in the calculation of the hydrostatic forces and the Froude Krylov forces.The experimental part brings the interactions between the fluid flow and the hull through semi-captive model tests.
