The SWOT mission (Surface Water and Ocean Topography), conducted by CNES and JPL, and scheduled for launch in 2020, is a major step forward for spaceborne altimetry, both for oceanography and continental hydrology. It is the first interferometric SAR mission whose specific objective is the measurement of water surface height. The main instrument of the mission, KaRIn, a Ka-band Radar Interferometer, has particular characteristics: very low incidence angle (from 0.6 to 3.9°), short wavelength (8.6 mm), and short baseline (10 m).
