Nonlinear systems are so diverse that generalized tools for control are difficult to develop. Nonlinear control theory requires rigorous mathematical analysis to justify its conclusions. This thesis addresses two distinct, yet important branches of nonlinear control theory: control of uncertain nonlinear systems and control of under-actuated systems.In the first part, a class of Lyapunov-based robust arbitrary higher order sliding mode (HOSM) controllers is developed for the control of uncertain nonlinear systems.
