A novel pattern reconfigurable antenna operating at 2.45 GHz is designed by exploiting the characteristic modes analysis (CMA). More in detail, this compact antenna is capable to steer the pattern null within a beam of 64° centered at broadside direction (θ = 0°), with a depth nulls greater than 18 dB. The pattern reconfigurability is obtained by changing the phase of two capacitive exciters hosted above the considered conductive plane. The study of the involved characteristic mode is presented and the proposed phase shifter microstrip network is introduced. © 2016 IEEE
