The tomb of Neferhotep, if datable to the mid 13th dynasty, with its rishi coffin, could represent the missing link between the previous fashion of rectangular coffins still used by kings and by the upper class of the late 13th dynasty and the sudden appearance of a new anthropoid rishi coffin in the 17th dynasty. Rishi coffins were already in use at Thebes during the mid 13th dynasty, but only with the adoption of the model by the royalty their production became evident and widespread during the last part of the 17th dynasty
