Introduction: Human cutaneous melanoma is a skin cancer with high metastatic potential, enhanced heterogeneity, and resistance to chemotherapy. It has been recognized that one of the most important factors responsible for treatment failure is the presence of a small subpopulations of cancer cells, known as melanoma initiating cells, that have stem cell properties, tumorigenic potential and the ability to self-renew. Cannabinoid signaling regulates cell proliferation, differentiation and survival, with different outcomes depending on the molecular targets and cellular context involved.
