Huntington disease (HD) is pathologically characterized by a selective neurodegeneration of vulnerable populations of neurons, with an early marked neuronal loss and atrophy in the neostriatum. Dopaminergic innervations of neostriatal neurons originate in the substantia nigra pars compacta.
