Caratteristiche cliniche e approccio diagnostico alla trombocitopenia nel cane: analisi retrospettiva di una casistica raccolta a Pisa e Lione

Thrombocytopenia (TCP) is generally associated with blood loss and typical signs on the skin or mucous membranes. Seventy-five dogs with reduced or inadequate platelet count were collected. The most frequent specific clinical signs were pale mucous membrane, melena and petechiae in both countries and related to the severity of TCP. In the diagnostic plan for each dog coagulation profile, bone marrow cytology, urinalysis, and serum electrophoresis were mostly used in Pisa and coagulation profile, ultrasound, radiology, and urinalysis were mostly assessed in Lyon. The buccal mucosal bleeding time was used very frequently in Lyon. The pathophysiology mechanism of the TCP was almost similar being the increased destruction the most frequent cause. In Pisa the primary cause of TCP were immune-mediated and inflammatory/infectious, while in Lyon neoplastic and inflammatory/infectious were prevalent
