Tuberculosis is a major health problem that yearly causes the death of 2 million people and disease in 9 million people. Many of the pulmonary tuberculosis cases in adults result from the reactivation of an initially controlled latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and it is estimated that about one third of the world population is latently infected with the bacillus. The immune mechanisms preventing reactivation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection are poorly understood, but recent studies indicate that over the different stages of infection the bacterial antigen composition is changing, implying that the extent of recognition of specific antigens could also vary.
