Le culte de Saint Nicolas en Angleterre

St. Nicholas' cult arrived in England before the Norman conquest of 1066, and was widely spread in the island thanks to the influence of many English bishops who, between Xth and XIth centuries, were trained in Lorraine and Normandy, areas where the cult of the Saint arrived in an early age. Was created a privileged axis between Bec abbey and the diocese of Canterbury. In 1062 Wulstan, bishop of Worcester, in his Portiforium, a prayer book, inserted St. Nicholas among the local saints to pray. From the 11th century, were composed and / or spread throughout England, Vitae and collections of miracles, focused on the patronage of Nicola on the sea, his privileged relationship with the childhood and school, but also his strength in fighting the Devil for the salvation of the souls (Visio monachi de Eynsham). The dramatization of episodes of his life in miracle plays and the celebrations of the boy bishop further contributed to the spread of his cult. The different cultural, social, and spiritual mood with the Reformation and the Elizabethan Settlement reduced the popularity of Myra's bishop. From the 15th century the figure of St. Nicholas begins to have a slow, unstoppable but unjustified transformation into Santa Claus, probably also due to some elements / episodes related to the origin and the evolution of his cult (especially the episodes/miracles of Three girls and Three clerics, coinciding with the liturgical feast in the Advent period). The large chronological arch included in this conference, extending up to the 21st century, is largely functional for the reconstruction of the cult of St Nicholas in England: a diffusion that has seen a renewed recovery from the XIX-XX century up to the recent initiatives promoted by James Rosenthal, founder of the St Nicholas Society in UK and USA. Rosenthal inaugurates the 21st century with a series of new initiatives to disseminate the historic knowledge of St. Nicholas.Arrivato in Inghilterra prima della conquista normanna del 1066, il culto di San Nicola ha conosciuto un’ampia diffusione sull’isola, grazie all’influenza di numerosi vescovi inglesi che, tra X e XI secolo, si erano formati in Lorena e in Normandia ‒aree in cui il culto del santo arriva in epoca precoce‒ evidenziando un asse privilegiato tra l’abbazia di Bec e la diocesi di Canterbury. Nel 1062 Wulstan, eletto vescovo di Worcester, nel suo Portiforium, un libro di preghiere composto per dare direttive ai fedeli, inserì San Nicola tra i santi locali cui rivolgersi. A partire dall’XI secolo, furono composte e/o diffuse sul territorio inglese Vitae e raccolte di miracoli nelle quali si evidenzia soprattutto il patronato di Nicola sul mare, il suo rapporto privilegiato con il mondo dell’infanzia e della scuola, ma anche la sua forza nel combattere il Diavolo per la salvezza delle anime che si affidano a lui (Visio monachi de Eynsham). La drammatizzazione degli episodi della sua vita nei miracle plays e le celebrazioni del boy bishop contribuirono ulteriormente alla diffusione del suo culto. La diversa temperie culturale, sociale e spirituale avviata con la Riforma e con l’Elizabethan Settlement che aveva vietato le manifestazioni del boy bishop, determinò un momentaneo ridimensionamento della popolarità del vescovo di Myra. A partire dal XV secolo la figura di San Nicola comincia a subire una lenta, inarrestabile, ma non giustificata, trasformazione in Santa Klaus, probabilmente anche a motivo di alcuni elementi/episodi legati alla origine e alla successiva evoluzione del suo culto (soprattutto Tre fanciulle e Tre clerici, coincidenza della festa liturgica nel periodo dell’Avvento). L’ampio arco cronologico compreso da questo Convegno, esteso fino al XXI secolo, risulta quanto mai funzionale alla ricostruzione dell’iter cultuale di San Nicola in Inghilterra: una diffusione che ha visto una rinnovata fioritura proprio a partire dal XIX-XX secolo, fino alle recentissime iniziative promosse da James Rosenthal, fondatore della St Nicholas Society in UK e USA, che inaugura il XXI secolo, con una serie di nuove iniziative per la diffusione della conoscenza della figura storica di San Nicola
