A study aimed at determining how the geometry and chemistry of pattern influence the behavior of different cell lines was described. A photoimmobilization procedure was used to create micropatterned surfaces obtaining stripe pattern of hyaluronan (Hyal) and its sulfate derivative (HyalS), as well as spots patterns bound to the polysaccharide substrates of two proteins, fibrinogen and fibronectin. The influence of chemistry and topography on the behavior of specific cells was analyzed in terms of cell adhesion, migration, and orientation. All the different cells were found to demonstrate low affinity for the immobilized Hyal, while the response to HyalS was found to depend on the cell types
