In 2006, Montenegro declared its independence and as a result, for the first time the existence of the Montenegrin language was of officially announced. In 2008, the government created a new institution to prepare a language standard of the language of Montenegro. At the beginning of the work two groups of linguists, from Cetinje and Niksic, could not find any common ground in regard to the Montenegrin standard. The standard from Cetinje, however, had the strong support of the Montenegrin government. They thought that the Montenegrin language had its origins in the 19th century.
