Profile of English Teachers’ Competence in Maros Regency

ABSTRACT NURFITRINI RAMADHANI. 2015. Profile of English Teachers’ Competence in Maros Regency. (Supervised by Mansur Akil and SyarifuddinDollah) This research employs QUALquan approach. It aims at describing of (i) pedagogical competence, (ii) personality competence, (iii) professional competence and (iv) social competence of teachers of English in Junior High School in Maros Regency. The population of this research is all the teachers of English who teach in Junior High School in Maros Regency divided into three based on the school area; urban schools, sub-urban schools and rural schools. There will be two teachers (certified and uncertified teacher) represent each area chosen through purposive random sampling. There are some instruments of this research. They are direct observation, questionnaires and TOEFL test. The data is analyzed by descriptive analysis and narrative interpretation. The findings describe (i) the pedagogical competence of teachers is classified into high percentage;(ii) the personality competence of teachers is classified into very high percentage; (iii) the professional competence is categorized into very high percentage, and;(iv)the social competence of teachers is categorized into very high. Both certified teachers and uncertified teachers achieve very high percentage even though the uncertified teachers perform higher in average in all competences. The findings indicate that; (i) the pedagogical competence of teachers shows that the scope of area does not affect the performance and the difference occurs because of educational background, contextual knowledge, lack of awareness of being teacher, and school’s qualification for the teachers employed; (ii) the personality competence of teachers is influenced by the teaching experiences and age, even the older ones does not mean better in the personality; (iii) the professional competence of teachers is influenced by high self-development and ICT use, while mastering the subject matter appears to be various because of the different disciplinary knowledge, and; (iv) the social competence of teachers is influenced by the level of education and the teaching experiences. 191 viii ABSTRAK NURFITRINI RAMADHANI. 2015. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan kompetensi pedagogik, kompetensi kepribadian, kompetensi profesional dan kompetensi sosial guru Bahasa Inggris di Sekolah Mengengah Pertama di Kabupaten Maros. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah semua guru Bahasa Inggris yang mengajar di Sekolah Mengengah Pertama di kabupaten Maros yang dibagi menjadi tiga berdasarkan lokasi sekolah; sekolah urban; sekolah sub-urban, dan; sekolah di daerah pedesaan. Akan ada dua guru (guru bersertifikat dan tidak bersertifikat) mewakili setiap daerah yang dipilih melalui penyampelan acak purposif. Ada beberapa instrumen penelitian yang digunakan; observasi langsung; kuesioner, dan; tes TOEFL. Data tersebut dianalisis dengan analisis derkriptif dan dipaparkan dengan interpretasi naratif. Temuan menggambarkan (i) kompetensi pedagogik guru diklasifikasikan dalam persentase yang tinggi; (ii) kompetensi kepribadian guru dikategorikan ke dalam persentase sangat tinggi; (iii) kompetensi profesionaldikategorikan dalam persentase yang sangat tinggi, dan; (iv) kompetensi sosial dikategorikan dalam persentase yang sangat tinggi. Baik guru bersertifikat dan guru tidak bersertifikat mencapai prsentase yang sangat tinggi, namun guru yang tidak bersertifikat menunjukan performa yang lebih baik dibandingkan guru bersertifikat dalam nilai rata-rata di semua kompetensi. Temuan mengindikasikan; (i) kompetensi pedagogik guru menunjukkan bahwa cakupan wilayah tidak mempengaruhi performa mereka dan perbedaan kompetensi pedagogik terjadi karena bebrapa alasan seperti latar belakang pendidikan, pengetahuan kontekstual, rendahnya kesadaran guru, dan kualifikasi sekolah dalam merekrut guru; (ii) kompetensi kepribadian guru dipengaruhi oleh pengalaman mengajar dan usia, namun usia yang lebih tua tidak berarti memiliki kepribadian yang lebig baik; (iii) kompetensi profesional guru dipengaruhi oleh tingginya pengembangan diri dan penggunaan TIK , sedangkan penguasaan mata pelajaran berbeda di antara guru karena perbedaan disiplin ilmu yang mereka miliki, dan; (iv) kompetensi sosial guru dipengaruhi oleh tingkat pendidikan dan pengalaman mengajar
