The Effects of EFL Teacher Communication Skills on Students’ Speaking Performance

ABSTRACT MUSDALIFAH. The Effects of EFL Teacher Communication Skills on Students’ Speaking Performance (Supervised by Muhammad Amin Rasyid and Syarifuddin Dollah). Teacher is the communicator in the class. Teacher communicates with students during the activities in the class. It is important to know whether the teacher applies the communication skills properly in the classroom or not; and the students’ perception about the teacher’s communication skills’ effects on their speaking performance. For that reason the researcher came with problem statements, they are (i) what kind of communication skills do EFL teachers of Bosowa International School and SMA Negeri 2 Makassar use in the classroom? and (ii) what are the effects of their communication skills on students’ speaking performance? This study aimed to find out and describe (1) the kinds of communication skills used by the EFL teachers of Bosowa International School in the classroom and, and SMA Negeri 2 Makassar and (2) the effects of their communication skills on the students’ speaking performance. The study applied qualitative method. The data resources were the teachers’ verbal and non-verbal communications applied in class X Science of Bosowa International School and class X10 of SMA Negeri 2 Makassar. In collecting the data, this research employed direct observation, questionnaire, and interview. The researcher found that (1) the verbal communication skills used by the teachers were reflection, questioning, explaining, questioning, explaining, humor and laughter, and feedback. The Non-verbal communication skills used by the teachers were physical appearance, eye contact, facial expression, voice, body posture and gesture, physical space, and active listening. (2) Based on the questionnaire filled by all students in both classes and followed up by interview with ten informants, five students each in Bosowa International School and SMA Negeri 2 Makassar, most students perceived that the ways teacher communicate is effective on their speaking performance, which is the mean score 185.73 for the students of Bosowa International School and 192.53 for the students of SMA Negeri 2 Makassar. The study concluded that applying good communication skills was very important and needed by the students. The way the teacher presented the lesson determined the teaching success. The non verbal communication skills supported the verbal communication skills. The effects of those verbal and non verbal communication skills were effective directly and indirectly on the students’ speaking performance. ABSTRAK MUSDALIFAH. Guru adalah komunikator di kelas. Guru berkomunikasi dengan siswa ketika melakukan kegiatan mengajar di kelas berlangsung. Adalah penting untuk mengetahui apakah guru mengaplikasikan kemampuan berkomunikasi dengan baik atau tidak; dan mengetahui persepsi siswa tentang kemampuan berkomunikasi guru pada kemampuan berbicara mereka. Oleh karena itu peneliti tiba pada rumusan masalah (i) kemampuan komunikasi apa yang diterapkan guru Bosowa International School dan SMA Negeri 2 Makassar di kelas? dan (ii) Apa efek dari kemampuan mereka berkomunikasi terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa? Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memperoleh dan mendeskripsikan (1) Jenis-jenis kemampuan komunikasi yang guru Bosowa International School dan SMA Negeri 2 Makassar gunakan di kelas, dan (2) Efek-efek dari kemampuan komunikasi yang mereka terapkan pada kemampuan berbicara siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Data diperoleh dari komunikasi-komunikasi verbal dan nonverbal yang digunakan di kelas X Sains di Bosowa International School dan kelas X10 di SMA Negeri 2 Makassar. Dalam pengumpulan data, penelitian ini menerapkan observasi langsung, angket, dan wawancara. Peneliti melihat bahwa (1) kemampuan berkomunikasi yang digunakan guru adalah refleksi, pertanyaan, penjelasn, canda tawa, dan umpan balik. Kemampuan komunikasi non verbal yang diterapkan oleh guru adalah penampilan, kontak mata, ekspresi wajah, suara, posisi tubuh dan gestur, jarak, dan aktif mendengarkan. (2) Berdasrkan angket yang telah diisi oleh semua siswa di kedua kelas tersebut dan diikuti dengan wawancara dengan sepuluh informan, lima siswa pada setiap sekolah di Bosowa International School dan SMA Negeri 2 Makassar, Umumnya siswa berpendapat bahwa cara guru berkomunikasi efektif terhadap kemampuan berbicara mereka dimana nilai meannya sebesar 185.73 untuk siswa Bosowa International School dan 192.53 untuk siswa SMA Negeri 2 Makassar. Penelitian ini memperoleh kesimpulan bahwa penerapan kemampuan komunikasi yang baik di kelas sangatlah penting dan dibutuhkan oleh siswa. Bagaimana guru menyajikan pelajarannya menetukan keberhasilan pengajaran. Efek dari kemampuan komunikasi verbal dan non verbal secara langsung dan tidak langsung efektif terhadap kemampuan siswa dalam berbicara
