International audienceKnowledge of the ancient city of Langres has recently been enhanced by new data which have allowed us to reconsider the question of the establishment of the civitas-capital of the Lingones. This new information in particular bears on understanding of the Celtic background to the Roman city. Research undertaken in advance of development has yielded evidence for major urban development during the Augustan period on the site of the Gallic oppidum itself. Surveys and studies of material carried out to the north of Langres have revealed important data about the capital of the Lingones and its surroundings, especially about the appearance and rise of the urban centre from the middle La Tène and during the Julio-Claudian peri...
