International audienceBeyond the official discourse and above the heated debate that has often dominated the historiography of politico-religious relations, we find a Catholic mission that is heavily involved in public life in Upper Volta 1940-1950. Even if they sometimes seem to have a more visible influence, it was rather on the back-stage of colonial drama that the White Fathers emerged as political actors. With their training of the elite and their building networks and pragmatic alliances, the mission took on a stature that made them indispensable in the colonial venture.Au-delà du discours officiel et au-dessus du débat passionné qui a souvent dominé l’historiographie des relations politico-religieuses, nous découvrons une mission catholique fortement impliquée au sein des logiques publiques de la Haute-Volta des années 1940-1950. Même s’ils assument parfois une visibilité affichée, c’est davantage sur l’arrière-scène du théâtre colonial que les Pères Blancs se remarquent dans la direction des acteurs politiques.
