Genèse d'un principe saussurien : la linéarité

International audienceAs we know, Saussure's body of work is eminently problematic. At first, his thinking was only known through Course in General Linguistics, compiled after his death by two of his peers from students' notebooks. Half a century later, the discoveries of those notebooks and of self-written documents, will cast a new light on his thinking. Studying Saussure's work and its meaning has to include this paradox: he did not publish what he wrote, and did not write what has been published under his name.In this article, we would like to focus on one of the linguistic principles uncovered by Saussure: the linearity of the signal. That concept, along with the arbitrariness of the sign, forms one of the two major characteristics of the linguistic sign as defined in his teachings. We will develop how this concept elaborates itself over his career through unfinished handwritten pieces about: phonetics, legendary research, anagrams in antique poetry... With this example, through the variations of those handwritten pieces, their deletions, their blanks, and the changes in terminology they include, we will show that here is a way to understand the genesis of Saussure's thinking.Le corpus saussurien est, on le sait, éminemment problématique. Sa pensée ne fut dans un premier temps connue que par le biais du Cours de linguistique générale, compilation posthume par deux de ses disciples de cahiers de notes d’étudiants. La découverte, un demi-siècle plus tard, de ces cahiers d’étudiants ainsi que de nombreux textes autographes jettera une lumière nouvelle sur sa pensée. L’œuvre et la réception de Saussure résident ainsi dans ce paradoxe : il n’a pas publié ce qu’il a écrit et n’a pas écrit ce qui a été publié sous son nom. Nous voudrions, dans cet article, porter notre attention sur l’un des principes linguistiques découverts par Saussure : la linéarité du signifiant. Celui-ci forme, avec l’arbitraire du signe, l’un des deux caractères primordiaux du signe linguistique tel qu’il est défini dans les cours. Il s’agira d’étudier comment s’élabore cette notion à travers les travaux manuscrits laissés inachevés tout au long de sa carrière : sur la phonétique, les recherches légendaires, les anagrammes dans la poésie antique... Par cet exemple, nous tacherons surtout de démontrer que c’est dans les variations de ces textes manuscrits, avec leurs ratures, leurs blancs et leurs changements terminologiques, que peut s’appréhender la formation de la pensée saussurienne
