The Tridentine liturgical restoration led to an extensive change of Catholic practicies. The archbishop of Milan Carlo Borromeo (1564-1584) fighted for instance against the long Milanese carnival in the name of tradition. After Peter Burke’s classical study this liturgical reformation has been an emblem of the Church’s fight against popular culture in modern times. But in the Milanese sources we can analyze almost a confrontation between secular and ecclesiastical authorities about the liturgical calendar. In this article we show that Carlo Borromeo used a peculiar way to convince Milanese people that the abolition of the last day of carnival was necessary.
