L’<i>Hygiène</i> de Galien : à propos de la traduction en anglais moderne, son actualité gérontologique

In 1951, Sidney Licht MD arranges for the publication of the first translation in modern language of De sanitate tuenda, written by Galen between 175 and 190 AD. Robert Montraville Green MD, emeritus professor of anatomy at Harvard Medical School and former obstetrician, trained in the Classics at the Boston Latin School, is assigned to the translation. Henry Ernest Sigerist, renowned history of medicine specialist at the time, writes the introduction. This volume is thought to be the first in a series of translations and publications of twenty other works by Galen, but will eventually be the only one released. Despite some shortcomings, it currently remains the only translation allowing readers not versed in Greek or Latin to get a glimpse at Galen’s thoughts, and especially on the measures to be implemented to age comfortably. Reading this book allows us to fully appreciate how accurate this great physician’s observations were, and how topical they remain today. Modern gerontology, which appeared at the close of the XIXth century, corroborated Galen’s observations made some two thousand years ago.En 1951, le Docteur Sidney Licht fait publier la première traduction en langue moderne de l’Hygiène (De sanitate tuenda libri VI) rédigé par Galien entre 175 et 190 de notre ère. C’est le docteur Robert Montraville Green, professeur d’anatomie à la Harvard Medical School et gynécologue-obstétricien à la retraite, ayant été formé aux Classiques à la Boston Latin School, qui est chargé de cette traduction. L’historien de la médecine Henry Ernest Sigerist en écrit l’introduction. Ce premier volume s’inscrit dans un programme plus vaste prévoyant la traduction en anglais de vingt autres textes de Galien, qui ne seront pas publiés. Malgré ses limites, cette traduction reste à l’heure actuelle la seule permettant aux non hellénistes et non latinistes d’approcher la pensée de Galien sur les mesures à prendre pour conserver la santé tout au long de la vie et ainsi permettre à chacun de vieillir confortablement. À la lecture de cette oeuvre, on mesure la finesse d’observation et l’actualité de ce grand médecin de l’Antiquité ; la gérontologie moderne, apparue à la fin du XIXe siècle avec l’accroissement de la longévité, a corroboré les observations qu’il avait déjà faites il y a près de deux mille ans
