Ultrastructural changes in the alveolar endothelial and epithelial cells are described and the pathogenesis of the lung oedema is briefly discussed. lNTRODUCfiON Steck (1928), Alexander (1931) and Henning (1956) have described the gross and light microscopical lesions in domestic ruminants with heartwater (HW). They con-sidered lung oedema a constant lesion in most of the animals that succumbed to the disease.
