Nowadays, more than 3.200 bromeliads species are known, with 70 % of the genus and more than 40 % of the species occurring in Brazil (Grant & Zijlstra, 1998), inhabiting all parts of the country, but having the Atlantic coast as the largest diversity center (Paula, 2001). The different bromeliads genera require different light intensities to their full development.
