Cosmetic surgery is an increasingly normalized aspect of beauty rituals within many modern societies (Blum, 2003; Sullivan, 2004). In particular, the pursuit of beauty through surgical means is now big business within Western cultures (Sullivan). Americans spent close to $10.5 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2009, and more than 10 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2009 (American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery [ASAPS], 2009).
