that those people in a position to realize their housing values tend to seek out areas of relatively low urbanization. Further, the loading on fertility (-.458) suggests that family size influences the choice of residential areas by urbanization. Both of these facts are relatively well known and have been demonstrated before, but they do serve to illustrate ways in which housing constrains social behavior. That the structure of housing is not entirely selective of family-related population characteris-tics is demonstrated by the very existence of Factor B. This factor, which is orthogonal to Factor A (urbanization), loads most highly on fertility (.735), double occupancy (-.510), and females in the labor force (-.444). Thus, the single concept of urbanization is not sufficient to account for variations in these and similar popula-tion characteristics. All of these variables describe characteristics of the population rather than of the dwelling units. It is difficult to name Factor B mainly because no one variable has a very high loading on it. Average family status is a loose designation which could be justified if it could be demonstrated that these variables also cluster on an individual family basis: that is, if these variables characterize families unidimensionally as well as neighborhoods. Only further research can provide a definitiveanswer, but tentatively the term family status will be retained. In concluson, this paper has essentially repli-cated the results of Van Arsdol, Camilleri, and Schmid in demonstrating the factorial existence of the Shevky-Bell dimensions. The characteristics which were combined in the single index of urbani-zation in the earlier studies were found to possess two common dimensions in Toledo. In particular the housing characteristics formed one factor while family characteristics formed another. The importance of identifying these factors as meas-ures of residential neighborhoods as such was stressed. Only when they are interpreted in this way do the factors provide a clear conceptual base upon which to build a theory relating space to social behavior
