We report a case of hypercholesterolemia that occurred 2 weeks after the start of highly active antiretroviral therapy following a needlestick exposure to human immunodefi-ciency virus (HIV) in an HIV-negative health care worker who was receiving thyroid replacement therapy. The elevated thyrotropic hormone level and hypercholesterolemia re-solved after the antiretroviral therapy was stopped. Hypercholesterolemia is a sign of hypothyroidism. Hypercho-lesterolemia has also been reported in several studies [1] in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)–infected patients who were receiving protease inhibitors. We report a case of hyper-cholesterolemia that occurred 2 weeks after the start of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) following a needlestick exposure to HIV in an HIV-negative health care worker who was receiving thyroid replacement therapy. Case report. A 44-year-old female health care worker sus-tained a low-risk needlestick to her left forefinger that exposed her to HIV. Within 45 min of the needlestick, prophylactic therapy was initiated with zidovudine (300 mg orally q12h) and lamivudine (150 mg orally q12h).
