study of 29 Japanese prisoners of war captured near Pegu, Burma, and held in a forward divisional prisoner of war cage. It was thought that such a study would be useful as it might indicate what types of nutritional disturbance one could expect to find in Allied soldiers held captive by the Japanese in South East Asia, and their rehabilitation could be planned accordingly. METHODS Each Japanese prisoner of war was given a medical examination and stigmata of early nutritional failure, if present, were noted. Blood and urine samples were collected from each prisoner of war and analyzed in a mobile biochemical laboratory.
