The region has near-universal access to electricity, and 93 percent of the population has access to nonsolid fuel for cooking. despite relatively abundant hydropower, the share of renewables in energy consumption has remained relatively low. very high energy intensity levels have come down rapidly. The big questions are how renewables will evolve when energy demand picks up again and whether recent rates of decline in energy intensity will continue
