In a recent article on crime seasonality in this journal, Farrell and Pease (1994: 495) observed that they 'were surprised to find almost no published work ' on seasonal crime patterns and that 'it seems almost embarrassing that we do not yet know which crimes vary enormously across the year'. These observations should not pass without comment. There is a large body of increasingly sophisticated research literature on crime seasonality.
