The Australian and New Zealand Journal of Criminology Thirty Years On

This paper, in celebration of the Australian and New Zealand Journal'sthirty years of existence provides a reflective, self-critical analysis of its contents over this period and, for comparative purposes, the content of the British Journal of Criminology. While the findings of such an exercise must be treated with caution, they provide interesting glimpses of the way in which the discipline of criminology has been shaped and developed in the journal. During 1997 the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Criminology (ANZJC) entered its thirtieth year. The fact that it has now reached this milestone and, in the course of doing so, has become "one of the major criminology journals of the major countries of the English speaking world " (Cohn & Farrington 1998, p. 156) is no small achievement. As such, this paper- a review of journal content over this period alongside a content analysis of the British Journal of Criminology (BJC) for comparative purposes- is written in recognition of this achievement. In particular, it is written in recognition of that small number of Australian pioneers who worked so hard in the 1960s to establish both the Society and the journal, an
