Case 1: A 54-year-old previ-ously healthy woman present-ed to the emergency depart-ment with a history of several days of progressive dyspnea. She was taking combined estrogen-progestin therapy for symptoms of menopause. On the basis of elements of her history and physical examination, she was consid-ered to have a moderate clinical like-lihood of pulmonary embolism (PE).
