Ancient Geomagnetic Field Intensities-III Historic and Archeological Data: H13X and H14-15 Geological Data: 622-29

This catalogue contains all ancient geomagnetic field intensity data known to the author at 1968 June I and not previously appearing in these lists (Smith 1967c, d). In addition, a short list of publications relevant to the study of ancient field intensities, but containing no new data, is included. Historic ahd arctreological data as the past 10 OOO years. Table 1 contains 21 columns as follows: For the purpose of this catalogue, historic and archeological time has been defined Column 1. Country of origin of material studied. Column 2. Reference number prefixed with letter H (historic and archeological). The individual field intensity number follows the set number after a hyphen. Column 3. Age of material used. Dates A.D. have been expressed as positive numbers and dates B.C. as negative numbers. The ' age ' of the material refers to the time of origin of the natural remanence and not necessarily to the physical age of the sample. Column 4. Locality from which material obtained. Column 5. Nature of material. Column 6. Method used for main field intensity determination. Th refers to the technique developed by Thellier & Thellier (1959). Column 7. Main tests of reliability and precautions taken to obtain a reliable result. The code letters used here refer to the list beneath the Table, and are the same as those used in previous compilations of historic and archeological data except where new letters have been required. Columns 8 rmd 9. Numbers of samples and specimens, respectively. Specimens are cut from samples, but where no distinction has been made in the original publica-tion, numbers have been listed in column 8. Column 10. Ratio of ancient field intensity (F) to present laboratory field (F,,*). Column 11. Present field intensity in laboratory. Column 12. Errors. The form of the errors is given in the accompanying notes
