After having justified the gauge invariant version of the chiral Schwinger model we perform canonical quantization via Dirac brackets. The constraints are First class, exhibiting gauge invariance. As a result we find that this is the reason for the consistency of the model of Jackiw and Rajaraman. ROT 1987 Academic Press. Inc. 1
