A burned mouse model is described for measuring the ability of topically applied agents to prevent burn wound sepsis by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This animal model in comparison to previously described laboratory rat models is simpler in design, more economical, and affords earlier results. Following an 8-second flame burn, mice were immediately infected by topical inoculation of the freshly burned skin. A regression analysis of different concentrations of inocula showed a good correlation with both animal mortality and the mean time to death.
