Inside of proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells many physical and electrochemical phenomena occurs simultaneously especially within electrodes where hydrogen and oxygen react with protons and electrons forming an electrical circuit to generate power spontaneously. Typically, polarization curves are obtained as a measure of fuel cell performance gauging the response of the cell voltage as changing current densities or vice versa. This provides a lump-summed performance of a fuel cell, but the results are limited to gaining the understanding of the effects of various processes related to the structure and the properties of the cell.
