Factors Contributing to

The community college system has become one of the primary settings of postsecondary education in this country. The American Association of Com-munity and Junior Colleges reported in its statistical yearbookof 1988 that over five million students were enrolled in American community colleges. This represents over 40 percent of all undergraduates. The center of teaching and learning of any community college is the faculty. The job of the faculty member is clearly that of a teacher. Few, if any, commu-nity colleges require research or publication. Research into what contributes to or predicts faculty job satisfaction at the community college level is important, for several reasons. Studies in recent years indicate that overall job satisfaction by university faculty members has declined and fewerfaculty members would choose the same profession again (Willie & Stocklein, 1982; Gannon etal, 1980; McNeece, 1980, Hunter eta!, 1980).
